IP Management has become a major strategic factor in today’s business. In modern companies, management of intellectual property rights, e.g. patents, copyrights, or know-how, is developing at breakneck speed. In this context, IP management deals with strategic issues surrounding the research and development of protectable properties, trademarks and other sundry developments, especially those with cross-functional capabilities. Apart from specific brand positioning, this covers the commercial evaluation and analysis of, e.g. the financial strength of an IP portfolio. Hereby, individual protective mechanisms from various legal areas must, as a whole, be considered and carefully coordinated, as many such protective laws concerning patent, design, and copyright, as well as other sundry rights, are often complementary.
